How to connect to a remote Windows desktop via RDP

Quickly launching a desktop connection

All versions of Windows come with the Remote Desktop Connection utility preinstalled. You can launch it as follows:

1. Open the “Start” menu and start typing "Remote Desktop Connection"
2. Select the app that appears in the list
3. Or press Win + R, type mstsc and confirm with the Enter key

Setting up a connection to a remote Windows server

To connect to a Windows server:

• Enter the server's IP address in the “Computer” field
• Click “Connect”
• Enter the username and password (the login administrator is often used)

These details are usually provided when the service is activated.

Click “Show Options” to save the session to an .rdp file for reuse.

Reasons why RDP may not connect

If the connection is not established, check:

• That the IP address is correct
• The state of your internet connection
• Whether the server is reachable over the network
• Whether port 3389, used for RDP, is open

• Make sure the login and password you entered are correct
• Check whether the Caps Lock key is on
